Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

I work closely with clients to assist them with symptom management of a wide range of disorders including depression, anxiety disorders, addictions, and low self-esteem.

What is CBT?

The way we think has a powerful impact on our feelings and behaviours. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) helps us to change our negative and anxious thoughts so we can feel and function better in order to improve our quality of life.

CBT training involves the therapist listening carefully to determine the challenges you are facing and then collaboratively developing a personal treatment plan that works for you. CBT focuses directly on your problems and on enhancing your commitment to your values. An important part of CBT is supporting and encouraging clients to practice and solidify newly acquired skills and strategies between sessions.

What to Expect When Beginning a CBT Program

  • Your therapist will work with you to design a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.
  • We will talk about feelings and how they connect to thoughts, assumptions, beliefs, and behaviours.
  • You will be encouraged to:
    • Try new ways to solve difficulties and problems
    • Challenge your old ways of doing things
    • Practice new behaviours every day (30 min–1 hr)
  • You and your therapist may decide to discuss your past for deeper self-understanding, but CBT focuses on the present.
  • The program usually lasts 8–20 sessions.
